UNIMY Awarded KPT Grant to Empower Orang Asli Youth Through
ICT Education

In a significant step toward inclusive digital empowerment, University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UNIMY) has been awarded a research grant by the Ministry of Higher Education under the Dana Inovasi Sosial dan Kajian Sosial (DIS) initiative.
The project, titled “Modul Intervensi Kesedaran ICT Dalam Kalangan Remaja Orang Asli”, has received RM65,817 in funding and will be conducted over a 9-month period, from 1st September 2025 to 1st June 2026.
Spearheaded by Lecturer, Ir. Syaiful Anas bin Suhaimi, with co-researchers Prof. Dr. Habibollah Haron, Muhammad Faizol Ahmad Ibrahim, Muhammad Haqeem bin Mohd Nasir, and Noor Fadzillah Azman, and strongly supported by Uplift, an NGO under BAC Education, this project is a powerful example of how technology can be used to uplift, educate, and inspire.
This project is set to extend beyond the classroom into real communities. Uplift, having previously adopted two Orang Asli villages – Kampung Serigala in Kuala Kuby Baru and Kampung Changkat Bintang in Slim River through its Teach4Good programme, brings deep grassroots experience and a strong commitment to education and empowerment.
Together with UNIMY, this collaboration ensures the initiative creates meaningful, lasting change where it's needed most.
Bridging Gaps with Tech & Heart
Rooted in the values of Malaysia MADANI, the initiative seeks to develop an educational intervention module focused on three pivotal areas in today’s digital world – Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Game Development.
Designed specifically for Orang Asli youth, the module will introduce early exposure to these fields in a way that is culturally respectful, accessible, and engaging. Through hands-on learning and relatable content, the project hopes to spark curiosity, build digital confidence, and encourage continued education after school.
At the heart of this whole project lies a simple but powerful idea, “Heritage meets technology.”
By integrating traditional community values with future-forward tech education, UNIMY will be helping young minds from underserved communities discover their potential and imagine new futures.
A University That Builds More Than Careers
Every transformative initiative begins with a vision. And at UNIMY, that vision goes beyond just preparing students for jobs. It’s about creating meaningful impact through technology, innovation, and inclusion.
As Malaysia’s first specialised digital technology university and a proud member of the BAC Education Group, UNIMY offers a full pathway of programmes, from pre-university to postgraduate, all designed to equip students with real-world skills in AI, cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, and software engineering. With strong ties to industry and a commitment to innovation, UNIMY has become a driving force in producing future-ready tech professionals. But more than that, it is also shaping a more inclusive and equitable society.
This mission is now set to take shape through the newly awarded KPT Dana Inovasi Sosial grant. This meaningful initiative reflects UNIMY’s belief that tech education should empower every community, especially those often left behind in the digital revolution.
A heartfelt congratulations to the UNIMY Research Team and here’s to building a digital future where no one is left behind.
