Alumni Spotlight: Abdu Muhaimin Hashim's Journey into Global Tech

When Abdu Muhaimin first stepped into University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UNIMY) as a Software Engineering student, he had one goal in mind: to do well academically. What he did not expect was how much the experience would expand his horizons, transform his confidence, and shape the professional he has become today.

Today, Abdu is a Software Engineer at Julius Baer in Singapore, contributing to digital transformation efforts in one of the world’s leading private banking institutions. His journey from a UNIMY freshman to an international tech professional is a story of growth, resilience, and the opportunities that come when you are willing to step forward.

Finding Strength in Challenges

Abdu's time at UNIMY was defined not only by what happened in the classroom, but also by the responsibilities he embraced outside it. Serving as the Student Council President in the 2020 and 2021 session was a pivotal experience, especially as he led during one of the most difficult periods in recent history.

Balancing academic work with leadership responsibilities during a pandemic demanded clarity, composure, and adaptability. Abdu shared that these challenges trained him to stay calm under pressure, communicate effectively, and manage a team made up of students from diverse backgrounds. The lessons he learned during that time made every new challenge feel less overwhelming. Whether he is navigating workplace demands or advancing his postgraduate studies, he carries with him the confidence built at UNIMY.

Raising the Bar for Himself

Before joining UNIMY, Abdu wanted to excel academically. After stepping into leadership, he realised he could aim much higher. His experience taught him that leadership beyond just his titles, but by his own responsibility, action, and the willingness to set a standard for others.

This shift in mindset pushed the expectations he had. He grew confident in speaking, leading projects, and taking initiative. Today, that same drive pushes him forward in his career and in his pursuit of a master’s degree. UNIMY was the place that helped him challenge his own limits and discover how far he could go.

A Lesson He Will Never Forget

When asked about his biggest takeaway from UNIMY, Abdu's answer was simple but valuable. He learned the importance of stepping forward even when the path feels uncertain. Leading during the pandemic taught him that courage is not something you wait for. It is something you practice until it becomes part of who you are.

That lesson carried him through his career, his involvement in Toastmasters, and every opportunity he has pursued since. It is a mindset built at UNIMY that continues to guide him today.

A Message to the Next Generation of UNIMY Students

Abdu's advice to current students comes from experience and sincerity. He encourages every UNIMY student to make their journey more than just passing modules. He urges them to build themselves, try new roles, lead events, and take ownership of their growth.“You may think your starting point is small, but your potential is not,” he shared.

“If I can go from leading the UNIMY Student Council to working in an international wealth management institution, and pursuing my Master’s, then all of you can create your own path too. Be brave, stay curious, and keep moving forward.”

A Journey Built on Foundation and Opportunity

Looking back, Abdu gave credit to UNIMY for giving him the academic grounding, practical experience, and personal growth that prepared him for a global career. From a modern industry-driven curriculum and hands-on projects to a multicultural student community, every part of the UNIMY experience played a role in shaping him to be the engineer and leader he is today.

Let his story be a reminder to all UNIMY students and beyond, that opportunities are not just available; they can be transformational. Sometimes all it takes is the courage to step forward and make the most of them.
