Prof. Dr. Vikneswaran Nair

Professor Dr. Vikneswaran Nair is a distinguished academic and leader in sustainable tourism and tourism technology, currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UNIMY). He is also an Adjunct Professor of Sustainable Tourism & Research Fellow at Wawasan Open University, Malaysia, and UOW Malaysia, and a consultant at King’s Park, Genting Highlands. He was formerly the President of DISTED College, Penang (2021–2025), where he played a pivotal role in expanding academic programmes and industry collaborations and stabilising the College out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before returning to Malaysia post-COVID in 2021, he spent five years in The Bahamas as a Professor and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of The Bahamas, where he was also a consultant to the Tourism Development Corporation and the Government of The Bahamas. With nearly three decades of experience, he was previously the Director of Research and Development and a Professor of Sustainable Tourism at Taylor’s University, Malaysia, where he was based for 19 years. His extensive research in sustainable tourism and tourism technology has led to over 400 publications and the successful supervision of 30 Master’s and PhD students. His consultancy work spans national and international projects, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. A highly decorated academic with numerous awards, Professor Nair was named Personality of the Year under the National Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Leadership Award in 2023. He also received the National Outstanding Educator Award in the College Category at the Private Education Excellence Awards 2023. His expertise in ecotourism has made him a sought-after speaker, researcher, and consultant. He is also the former president of the Malaysian Ecotourism Association (MEA) and accredited HRD Corp Trainer. In addition, he was also the former president of the Asia Pacific Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE). He is currently the Vice President of the Malaysia Institute of ESG and the President of The Malaysian Indian Educational Development Association (TheMIND). His research interests and expertise include Sustainable and Responsible Tourism, Rural Tourism, Community-Based Tourism, Tourism Technology, ESG and Crisis/Risk Management, with a strong focus on policy impact, resilience, and adaptation strategies for climate change in tourism
