UNIMY SRC Equips Seniors with Digital Knowledge

Old age doesn’t mean you stop dreaming about the future. With the rising use of technology in our everyday lives, the last thing we want is for our valued senior citizens to fall behind because they lack the digital knowledge and skills to function in today’s digital era.

With this in mind, UNIMY SRC collaborated with MIRM to organise “Digital Empowerment for Seniors”, an event designed to teach senior citizens how to use the different types of apps necessary for everyday use.

Staying Connected: Zoom and Google Meet

Conducting the session was UNIMY SRC President, Al Assame Osama, who began by introducing the different applications he would be coaching the seniors on, and why knowing how to use them mattered. He then walked the group through Zoom step by step — from creating an account and logging in, to starting a meeting.

Osama also covered the basics: muting and unmuting, turning video on and off, renaming themselves, and enabling virtual backgrounds. Many of the seniors shared that they have children living abroad, and that learning Zoom would help them stay in touch. Google Meet was also briefly covered, since its fundamentals are much the same as Zoom’s.

Everyday Essentials: Grab, Foodpanda & Medisafe

Osama then moved on to Grab, giving the seniors a step-by-step overview of booking rides before explaining how the food delivery side of the app works. He covered Foodpanda in much the same way. Last but certainly not least, Osama introduced Medisafe, an app designed to help track medicines and pills and monitor symptoms.

It was a fruitful session, with the senior citizens expressing their appreciation for learning, in detail, how to use technologies that have become essential in today’s world.

UNIMY SRC hopes to continue bringing this kind of digital empowerment and digital literacy to senior citizens, equipping them with the knowledge to embrace digitalisation with confidence. Stay tuned for more!
