Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy
BAC Education Group (BAC) comprises five distinguished higher education institutions: Brickfields Asia College, IACT College, Reliance College, Veritas University College, and UNIMY (the University of Malaysia International Youth). Together, these institutions serve thousands of students and employ hundreds of staff across Malaysia.
BAC has developed this Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy which aims to provide information on its’ commitment to safeguards and promotes equality amongst staff and students at BAC.
Statement
BAC has as its’ cornerstone principles, a culture that promotes equality amongst staff and students and aims to provide an environment in which all members of its community are treated with equality.
BAC IS committed to seeking to employ a workforce that is positive in attitude and receptive in nature. In an environment of equality amongst staff and students, students are provided a conducive place to excel academically and as a provider of employment BAC respects diversity amongst its’ staff in the spirit of inclusion of all. This Policy promotes good practice and holds tight to the principles of valuing, respecting and promoting the rights, responsibilities and dignity of individuals within our environment and furthers equality of educational and employment opportunity that is based on merit, irrespective of one’s background, beliefs and socio-economic status.
As a Private Higher Education Institution of Malaysia with global network, BAC has the interests of two main categories of individuals to care for and in doing so, its embraces the ideology of fairness by eliminating unlawful discrimination while encouraging equal opportunity for all and to provide a system whereby any discrimination seen to exist can be reported to the management.
BAC is committed to providing a campus and establishment that regards equality in opportunity irrespective of race, religion, gender and economic or social background and in doing so BAC shall ensure that students, staff and all persons applying to be a student or staff at BAC are treated fairly on the grounds of:
- age
- disability
- gender identity
- marital status or civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- race – (includes: race, colour, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origins)
- religion or belief including philosophical belief
- sex
- sexual preference
Scope
The arms reach of this policy extends all staff independent consultants, contractors, volunteers, casual workers.
The policy extends its’ arm to cover its’ students and to prospective students who have applied to study at BAC institutions.
In upholding and promoting an environment of non-discrimination and equality of opportunity, BAC’s policy extends its’ reach to the manner in which staff and students ought to respect each other and visitors to the College and other persons associated with the functions of BAC.
This policy maybe revised from time to time and shall be brought to staff and students’ knowledge accordingly.
Authorities and their obligations
The Management and Board of Governors of BAC have the ultimate accountability for compliance to BAC’s equality obligations. The Chief Executive Officer and the Registrar, who are members of the Board of Governors and the Human Resource Department, are custodians of this Policy and they are shouldered with the responsibility to ensure its’ enforcement and compliance.
Staff and students may raise a complaint regarding unacceptable behaviour and any non-compliance of this policy directly to BAC’s Human Resource department or to the Registrar or to the Student Services Department.
The duty rest upon the shoulders of all heads of departments and lecturers to set a good example by treating all members of BAC community with dignity and respect and to report any behaviour that is against this policy that fall within the ambits of victimisation, discrimination, harassment or bullying.
Aims of the Policy
BAC aims to promote equality of opportunity for all, through the following manner:
- maintaining a record of staff data and putting in place a analysis process;
- promoting the ideology of equality and inclusion of all in the aim of creating an environment where staff and students can feel a sense of belonging;
- publishing information on equality, diversity and inclusion through internal and external communications;
- training heads of departments and lecturers and administrative staff especially the Human Resource department personnel and in particular those who have responsibility for recruitment and selection;
- BAC student support services and BAC Human Resource Department must be accessible to all;
- ensuring that both existing staff and students, as well as those who seek to apply to work at and study with us, are treated fairly and are judged solely on merit and by reference to their skills and abilities;
- provide a venue for staff and students to discuss and raise concerns regarding equality, diversity and inclusion issues;
- ensure all contractors and service providers working with BAC are informed of this policy and are expected to comply to it;
- Adherence to laws of Malaysia.
Custodian
BAC’s community is made up of Senior Management, Head of departments, lecturers and all staff and all students who equally share responsibility for the implementation and execution of this policy and Human Resource Department should pioneer the advancement of this Policy.
BAC shall provide all staff and students access to institutional facilities and make alterations to working and learning environment to make it reasonably practicable to accommodate a diverse community.
Any staff member or student who believes that they may have been the victim of discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation shall have protection of the Human Resource Department and the Student Affairs Department of BAC respectively.
BAC shall integrate a system where those in charge of execution of this policy shall seek student bodies, as well as relevant external organisations, to combat all forms of unlawful discrimination and obtain feedback on the implementation of this Policy.
Non-Compliance
Non-compliance to this Policy shall be tantamount to warrant Disciplinary action and will be addressed through the relevant procedures executed by BAC Human Resource Department or if non-compliance and disregard to this Policy is by a student, the Students Affairs department under the purview of the Registrars department shall take relevant action.
Complaints
Equality and Diversity is held sacred to BAC and as such, should Human Resource Department or the Registrar’s department receive complaints relating to the non-compliance of this Policy which include harassment, bullying, victimisation or discrimination, the staff or student shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.
Staff and students of BAC or other parties who make a complaint of non-compliance to this Policy should be confident that the management of BAC shall not victimize the said staff or student but shall treat the staff or student with respect and ensure that disciplinary action shall be taken after due investigation.
Members of the public should address their complaints to the respective departments stated below:
Complaints regarding non-compliance to this Policy by a staff shall be addressed to the Human Resource Department and a complaint made against a student, the said complaint must be addressed to the Student Services Department which is under the purview of the Registrar of BAC.
